So i needed a grease gun for our flatbed, and well, mostly everything else. Instead of buying one, i found a couple of old ones my late grandpa had. I chose the best one and decided to refurbish/restore it. I figured he would like that too. :)

So, i took it apart and made sure the internals were worth keeping. In fact they are in great shape, so i cleaned up the old grease. It had some surface rust on the outside, as well as some missing paint, so i stripped it with a wire wheel down to bare metal. Next it got primer/paint/clear. I figure the clear will help protect it from the chemicals it will see. I thought the red, which is a very bright red, would be easy to see in the cabinet/fridge (:D) and its what i had. The ends got the same treatment, except in black.

And it got a new hose and coupler. The old one wasn't horrible, but i thought it would be best.

And re-assembled with Lucas Red-N-Tacky grease.

It was a fun little project and works great. Already greased the suspension, steering, and u-joints on the XJ.

I think old tools are often better than the new ones. I do prefer grease guns that have a one hand trigger especially when you have a hose, it's so hard to hold the hose on the grease fitting with one hand, and pump and hold the barrel of the grease gun with the other.

The fitting on this one holds itself on so its not a problem. But yeah, i agree, older tools are usually just made to last. This grease gun was sitting for at least 10 years but i'm sure well more than that and looked near new inside.
