I have heard that you need to place the shifter in neutral (PB on) and pull really hard. Look at Naxja.org. I think it was there I saw the post.

I think xjjeepthing posted something here recently about swapping his XJ handle for a GC handle. Pulling hard sounds right.

Found it! :link: (http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1002)

Put in neutral, press button, pull hard, don't hit your nose.

There should be a nut below the knob that you have to loosen in order to twist the knob off.

Didn't see one but I will look again. Old eyes don't see as good as they use to

I have a picture of the shift knob, shaft and nut but since it is from the Mopar Parts Guide I do not believe I can post it here. However it is for the 91-93 Model years. Maybe at some point they changed?

Yeas the older models have a nut that keeps the knob from getting loose or rotating. Never had a new model to play with. The threads on the older ones are 10/1.25 if that helps when looking for a replacement knob.

My friend's 2000 xj's shift handle popped off while wheeling. I don't think there's anything holding it on.

I'm bout ready to take a hacksaw to it. Jeeps master mechanic couldn't tell me how to take it off. He said he's never had to take one off in 23 years

I've pulled mine off before. I sat in the backseat with the XJ selector in 1-2 (engine not running!) and the e-brake on. Pulled on it and it came right off. Installation is the reverse.

I'll definitely have to do this! I broke off part of the shifter knob when I was taking the center console out...

That's right. xjjeepthing did a write up about pimping his ride with a Grand Cherokee transmission handle.

Step 1 remove all sharp objects behind you.
Step 2 Pull hard, no very hard. :smiley-laughing021:

ok finally got it off. you have to pry off the shift pattern section on top of the knob to get to the lock nut under neith. problem is it dont want to pop out. so i took a big monkey wrench locked it on there and turned it off. shift knob is messed up off course but its off:D.:woot:
