View Full Version : Front lower shock eye hitting the spring perch

I THINK I've found the major cause of the knocking sound in my front end. It appears the shock has moved off center of the poly bushing and is hitting the front of the square hole in the spring perch where it mounts when I hit bumps. I can twist the shock and make it hit by hand.

Question, is the poly bushing fried? I figure I might be able to recenter the shock, but it will just move forward again. Could I take a carbide burr and open up the two front corners of the hole to allow it to twist as I drive to stop this? Or do you think it will just move farther off center of the bushing?

I hate to have to replace the entire shock since they are ok. Anyone know if Skyjacker would sell just bushings for them?

Hey dude I just googled Skyjacker shock bushings. I don't see replacement bushings but there seems to be a lot of links about failure. I hated my Skyjunker stuff.

Thanks for the onfo on Google. I went there and clicked on a link to JeepForum about the exact same problem. A post had a part number for Energy Suspension bushings. Might try a set of them.

All along I thought the source of the noise was the disco's. I know they make SOME noise, but it looks like the shocks are the main source.

Spend $40 on a set of bar pin eliminators or make your own. Problem solved. I have the same problem with my Skyjacker shocks but it doesn't bother me enough to fix it. Someday I'll make some bpe's and be done with it.

You might be able to do this up front:

If it has worked over this far, it will keep going. You could try to replace those poly bushings with rubber, which requires a press and is a major pain in the backside. Or you could take Muds suggestion. I would seriously consider replacing the shock with another brand.

You can buy 5/8's polyurethane bushings pretty much anywhere and use a U-Joint press or a vice to help push bushings in and out. Also you might want to buy Bar Pin Eliminators or make your own.
JKS
Rusty's <----- They will needed to be moded and use a step drill to make the holes bigger.

I did the Rusty's not realize the amount of work it was going to take to get them to work If I was to do it again I would do JKS but I really like the one piece design from Rusty's. This will keep your shock sitting properly on the bushing
By the way mine didn't look like this mine were painted black

ok i have a question about the bar pin eliminators... I broke my bar pins and ended up cracking the bolt holes. So can i weld something like those onto it.

Yes, that would work fine.
