A week ago last Saturday my son calls me up and says: "Dad, what are you doing tomorrow"?

I reply: "I don't know, not much, why"?

"Do the trailer lights work?"

"They did when I parked it two years ago the last time I used it to tow for you"

"Let's go to South Tahoe tomorrow. I am buying a TJ".

"How much"?

"$1750"

At this point I am thinking:"What's wrong with it"?

So Sunday morning we hook up the trailer and find the lights don't work. The mother of all electrical gremlins has invaded my wiring. First there is power to the plug then not. Then we have brake lights with jumper wires, but plugged in only one and on and on. By noon he is getting a little antsy and says: "If I get some magnetic ones, will that help"? So off to town he goes and returns with some magnetic towing lights. We plug them in to my other existing four prong plug and they all work. Go figure.

So off we go, really late for a four and a half hour drive to get to South Lake Tahoe. Past the shortest mountain range in the world.

Just another CA volcano. Past Old Sacramento, nicely visible from the Interstate. Officially a ghost town within a metropolis when I was a Kid.

Stopped in Hangtown for gas.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/704px-2009-0724-F-TSodaWorks_zps1e8b66e8.jpg

And on up to the lake. It is just a wee little puddle. Here is a view across the short side.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/LakeTahoe1_zps6d2c2ba2.jpg

I lived here when I grew up, but the lake is so big I had never been down to the south end but twice all the time I lived there. I had never been on US HWY 50 either past Hangtown. So a new experience for me. (I lived two blocks from the lake at the far left edge) The weather was good and no snow on the roads. I hate towing on snow covered roads. So we get there about 4:30 and start loading up.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0139_zpsbed4487d.jpg

So you say, why so cheap? Well, this had been on Craig's List for an unbelievable month. The guy was wanting to be honest about it. Very high miles, horrible transmission leak, some parts gone and sold. It had a hard top, which he got good money for. A few other things were gone, like the radio and glove box. Then Paul (HUM WEE JR) asked the right question. "How much stuff do you have that wasn't sold"? A couple of trips later we had a lot stuff brought out and in the back of the pick up it went. By now it is getting dark and we need to get started. Stopped at Taco Bell and made a sharp turn to get in and rolled one of the tires off the rim. I hate tapered beads. We can't get enough air in to seat it and it is Sunday night after five and Paul has to be at work bright and early and his daughter Emily has to be at school. So we park the trailer and back down the hill we go. Now you have to understand, we don't have towing trips, we have towing adventures. Got back to the house at 10 PM, I crashed and Paul left for Grass Valley.

The next day I was up at the lake by 10AM with a jack and tools and took the tire down to the tire shop. It only took them 15 minutes with state of the art tools to get air in that tire. Five bucks well spent. Besides, they had the coolest parrot loose in the office. I had lunch, hooked up and on the road by noon. Now why couldn't this have happened yesterday?

So, here is the deal. We were expecting to be rebuilding an AW4 tranny. I stepped out on faith and bought a front seal hoping that might be it. There were so many drips off it that you couldn't tell exactly where it was coming from. But the majority of them were under the bell housing. So the following Sunday after going to Table Mountain together we threw a a cheap used top on and put some oil in the tranny and started it up and backed it off the trailer. Here is what it looked like in less than a minute.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0148_zpscada86c9.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0222_zps61bf2d71.jpg

I didn't take rocket science to figure out the leak was in the front. So we pulled up to the shop and I dug out some spare braided stainless steel hose and tossed it to him and in a few minutes he had it on. Topped of the tranny and took it for a spin. Works perfectly. Sure glad I didn't have to pull that oil covered tranny. I think we need to wheel it so we can get rid of that excess oil now.

All right here's the story.
Craigslist add # 1. One 1998 T.J. no top, no doors, no mirrors, no glove box, no back seat, no carpet, no back seat, has transmission leak, something making right front tire ware uneven. $2500 or best offer.
Paid $1750

Craigslist add # 2
Soft top with all hardware no upper doors $250
Went to Sacramento bought the top in the dark. It didn't look as good in the daylight, missing roll bar mount bracket
Paid $250

Craigslist add # 3
T.J. soft doors $250 T.J. mirror with windshield pillar mount brackets $30.
Went to auburn got doors, mirrors and somehow a crome trailer hitch that I didn't even know was for sale untill it was in my hands.
Paid $200

Went to junk yard bought 3rd mirror paid $6.50

Total so far $2206.50 not bad for a week of Craigslist shopping!
Stay tuned for more.

Hum Wee JR

Yesterday I put on the new to me soft doors and mirrors, removed my passenger side nerf bar, changed the oil and transmission fluid and filter. Thank you Chrysler engineers for putting a cross member in the way to make servicing the transmission a little more difficult the it should be. Drove down to the car wash sprayed degreaser on the engine and underneath it I washed the rest of it to. After test driving it down the highway the check engine light came on. Plugged in the code reader and... Misfire cylinder number 6.

I found a broken plug wire today. So, i went and got new spark plugs, spark plug wires cap and rotor. Got back to the house and had an upper radiator hose leaking. Radiator hose had to bee ordered. I replaced the parts I had took it for a test drive and check engine light again... Misfire cylinder number 6.

Check engine light on is an automatic fail for smog. I have to pass smog to get my new license plates. I need to get license plates to be able to get insurance. State of California requires insurance on all vehicals to be driven on the road.

Any thoughts about the cylinder number 6 misfire fixes would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Well I finally got a day off work so it was time to work on the tj. We found 2 wasp nests in the cab and one under the hood. I promptly served an eviction notice. Then we installed the roll bar mounts and finished installing the soft top.

Next the electrical gremlins. We found a blown fuse, so we went to town and got a pack of fuses. Changed a fuse. Turned the key and fried the new fuse. Next we got a wiring diagram. The fuse powered a relay under the hood. So we ran some temperary wires to the relay to bypass a short in the wiring. It worked, fuse is fine. Still no start and no gauges. We were trying to figure out if we were getting power to the e.c.m. when I had to leave. We are trying to figure out if the electrical short fried the e.c.m. or there is something else shorting out still.

The cheap jeep is going to make me work for it. But it will run again.

Update,
Last Saturday I picked up a sway bar and sway disconnects for $50. On Craigslist. After work today I drove down to the valley and picked up a 4 inch lift $200 on Craigslist. Included the following parts. 4 short arms, adjustable front and rear track bars, track bar mounting bracket, 6 shocks, 2 front springs and 4 rear springs. I guess need to start looking for tires.....when the right deal comes along you can bet I will get them.

I spend about 10 to 15 minutes a day checking most of the northern ca and eastern Nevada Craigslist postings. If its a good deal it won't last long and you have to call right away. I have called to late to many times for to much stuff. What I have collected so far has taken a couple of months of diligent searching. There are only a couple of items left to get until my Craigslist journey ends and the fab work begins.

It's Alive

:banana::smiley-bounce015::smiley-bounce015::smiley-bounce015::gay:

After lots of head scratching and studying wiring diagrams and searching for collective wisdom, we got it figured out. Dead ECM was due to a short in the circuit that powers several relays on start up. Somebody, we won't mention names, but he owns the TJ, Drives a dark blue YJ and has a green Mighty Mite in his avatar, pinched a wire under the tranny filter when he changed it.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0250_zps0b56851f.jpg (http://s649.photobucket.com/user/warriorsuspension/media/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0250_zps0b56851f.jpg.html)

A heat shrink wrap and a bar-b-que lighter and all is good. More tranny oil to thin out the old stuff too and vroom. However we developed a small problem.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0261_zps14c38738.jpg (http://s649.photobucket.com/user/warriorsuspension/media/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0261_zps14c38738.jpg.html)

The plastic tank is taking a pee, but it moves on its own power now which is a major improvement. Should get it smogged next week.

The boy scored on Craigs List again. $200 for a complete Rancho 4" lift and another $50 for sway bar disconnects. A few extra pieces here, so we will sort it out when installing

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0262_zps9a0c4516.jpg (http://s649.photobucket.com/user/warriorsuspension/media/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0262_zps9a0c4516.jpg.html)

Today was a good day. We passed smog with a 357K. So do these things last forever or what?

We had this small leak from a crack in the radiator.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0261_zps14c38738.jpg

It wouldn't pass smog that way with an antifreeze leak, and we didn't want to buy a new radiator, so we put a band aid on it and called it good

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0275_zps388e0249.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0401_zps5440a691.jpg

But it didn't all work out that way, oh well. We decided to put the lift on the TJ and had great plans on how we would put the rear in Sat night and front Sun morning. Wrong

We got the new control arms in, springs and shocks and found we didn't have the right bolts for the new track bar. Hmmm. Supposed to bolt right in. No bolts to be had on late Sat night, so we called it a night and went to the bolt store Sun morning. Got the bolts and the track bar didn't want to fit very well. Wait a minute, what is that funny bracket. A quick check to Rancho's website sad it was a rear track bar relocation bracket. OK, so maybe we should put this in. Buuuuuuttttt, we needed an angle drill for this and the only one I had was battery powered quick disconnect. Back to town for a 3/8" drill to fit it. The only one was in a set. Why thanks son, for the Father's Day gift. I love new tools. So we started drilling away, but had to chop up a 1/2" bit so we could fit into the small space.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0402_zpsd394bc53.jpg

Got the new bracket all bolted in, and guess what. The track bar is too long. Nice kit. Bolts right in. Off came the new bracket and we put the bushing end into the old track bar bracket and now the spherical rod end won't fit. So the grinder comes out.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0404_zps0d69bc41.jpg

Finally got that so it would fit. By this time the shocks are loose and springs removed. Why did we bother last night? Now we have to pull the axle over a 1/2" and the ratchet strap is not strong enough, out comes the 2 ton come along. We get it all lined up and the track bar won't bolt up with the come along in the way. Backed it off, can't find another spot for it, put it back on, finally got it lined up and bolted in. Reinstalled the springs and shocks for the third time. This is getting old.

So here it is, finally. You would never know I have done this stuff before.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0408_zps80fe2682.jpg

We did have one pleasant surprise however. We never looked underneath the rear before the lift, and we weren't thinking when we were working on it with all our frustrations. We were planning to convert the D35 over to non C clip when we locked it and were discussing that when we noticed something.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0409_zpsa4e825a6.jpg

That is a D44 sitting under there. I couldn't resist, I peeked at the tag. 3.73 gears. No wonder it did better with the 31s on it. That will make things simpler. The locker is even cheaper by a couple of bucks.

Well, finally found my way out to the shop today to finish the lift up. Wasn't near the problem the rear was and only had a third of the amount of tools out of the box. Vocabulary was better too. Here it is, $200 new used springs, shocks, track bar and $50 disconnects.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0420_zps555153b7.jpg

But it is obvious to me that front shocks are far too long. I think we will have to replace those. It will give a chance to evaluate two different types of shocks. We seem to disagree on what type we should use

The seat brackets from a 4 door xj don't fit the tj floor board. You have to switch the seat brackets. However the bolt pattern on the seats them selfs is the same. The xj seats are a little wider than tj seats and much more comfortable.

The center consoles are not inter changeable though. I found out the hard way.:bang: The E-brake handle is on the wrong side as well as the transmission tunnel is different.

All the wranglers around here are bought up by jeep only junk yards. That charge almost new prices in some cases more than new prices for there parts. So I am trying to find any parts that I need that are inter change able from xj to tj, from xjs. So far I have not really needed many stock parts. Mostly Aftermarket parts. Aftermarket parts are more fun anyway:D

The boy didn't like the 50s raked look, so I swapped out the coils for some I had from my XJ. These give the front a 5" lift. Might be a wee bit stiff, but we will see

So, today I got the winch finished up and working. I built brackets so we could change it from the TJ to the YJ in just a few minutes. Also managed to save the factory tow points. Too many Jeeps, not enough winches.

Wheeling time is getting closer.

The 4.7l V8 and 45RE tranny are going in. Probably going to use the front high steer D30 and D44HD in the blue YJ and the electric leather seats will go in my blue XJ. So the moral of this story is that Red Jeeps make great parts rigs for Blue Jeeps, the only true color for an awesome Jeep :smiley-taunt002::smiley-taunt002::smiley-taunt002:

You can be sure of that. Best to have a donor rig like we have. You need the complete wiring harness. Not sure about the fuel tank and pump. The stocker might be OK for that. I need to do some research on that one. We are getting FSM manuals for both rigs so we can have the wiring diagrams.

Paul drove his WJ into the shop. He managed to put all of 60 feet on the odometer so far. First time he has seen it in the daylight. We commenced pulling the engine and tranny out. Probably put the NP 247 on Craigs list for $25. Some sucker, I mean some discerning buyer will buy it.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0648_zps9413ed4e.jpg

That engine fits back into the firewall under the cowl and it is obvious that Chrysler has some sort of plate to fit the top of the motor to put it in. We could not even see the rear mounts. So we drug it out by the front

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0652_zpsc99b5b5b.jpg

once we got it out far enough we could attach the chain to the other attachment points.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0659_zps83b62956.jpg

The exhaust was a real bear to get out with it, so we ended up making a cut. The tranny is real long since it has an extra planetary in it.

Yup, poor Jeep is hurting. The anesthesia is wearing off. We will giver her another dose of IV Demerol. You know, that stuff that makes you think your head is not attached anymore and on some other planet. :D

But here is the latest. The engine will be picked up by Blackstar8507, a member of XJTalk. It is a good engine in spite of the milage and in much better shape than his current engine.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0673_zpsd2c8766d.jpg

So now we get to figure out how this increase in horsepower is going to fit. The above 4.0 is 58" from fan blade to tcase flange

The new one looks kind of long

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0674_zps62a51e5e.jpg

But part of that is an optical illusion because we slipped the 231 tcase on it to check the fit. It is 61" from fan to flange. We want to try to conserve things like drivelines and skid pan etc, so I think we will move the engine 3" forward. I think we will have plenty of room in the grill to do that. We will be getting a custom aftermarket radiator anyway

Only slightly custom. The old ones unbolted from the from the frame of the WJ. Not holding out hope of bolting them in on the TJ, but we will use them to weld in. So that part should be easy. Trans mount might be a little harder.

LOL Carves. But we shall see. :D

I put the first WJ part on. The WJ has two computers instead of one.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0675_zpsa330b27b.jpg

The one on the left, the cleaner one is the WJ module. I haven't verified it yet, but it appears to run the transmission and instrument cluster. It has numbers on the plug to identify each terminal.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0676_zpsa57898ea.jpg

The plug from the TJ fits in the right spot, however the terminals are not in the same place. So we have FSMs for both rigs with full wiring diagrams so I can switch the wires in the plug to avoid any cutting and reconnecting nightmares

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0677_zps9483cbfa.jpg

So here is the first thing done. Wiring not correct on that plug yet, but soon will be. The other two plugs and wires are on the engine currently and will be plugged in when we drop the engine in

Cut the motor mounts off the frame today. Then built the transmission mount.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0678_zpsb4f436f0.jpg

It looks simple enough, and is I suppose. This mount will position the rear of the transmission and transfer case in the exact position it was before. This will save us having to make new drivelines and transfer case linkage and we will be able to re use the stock skid plate which also doubles as the cross member. The exhaust mount on the TJ is close to the same as the WJ, only positioned slightly differently. Exhaust should be a breeze to fit too.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0682_zps267fe1ae.jpg

Been looking through the wiring diagrams and determined figuring this out was not going to be a five minute job. But did something in preparation to dropping the engine in this weekend. This engine and tranny require two computers to run everything, so I needed a place for the second. I thought since the first place by the battery was taken, in the middle of the firewall would be nice.

I can see where both of you would have that question. The computer came from behind the other one in the WJ, behind a metal plate in the engine compartment. There are cooling fins on the rear of it and an air space. All in all I think it will be cooler than in the WJ. There is talk of venting the hood anyway.

4.3LXJ

Did a little more prep work waiting for the weekend when we will shoe horn it in. First I serviced the transmission. But before doing that, I separated the tranny from the engine and completely drained the oil out of it and the torque converter. We plan to put synthetic high temp oil in it for those long hard trips and wheeling.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0688_zps666dbd95.jpg

One nice thing about this tranny, it has two filters. The usual oil intake in the bottom of the pan and a spin on for the oil that returns from the cooler. There was almost no iron on the magnet in the bottom.

Next is a critical part of the install in CA in order to pass smog. A stock exhaust. If it is the stock system back to the cat, then there is no questions asked. This one has the mandatory CA third cat. Four O2 sensors like the 2000 and up XJ has for better control of emissions

Bolted on the tranny mount and set it on the TJ cross member. It fit nicely. You can see the front lip of the pan looks like it was made just for this transmission. This tranny has the deep pan on it. Something I like in 4X4 trannys

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0693_zps30f8d886.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0694_zps5bafcb9a.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0695_zpsd510838d.jpg

The exhaust has a rear mount in a different location than the TJ, but uses the same rubber bushing. I needed to raise the location of the stock bushing about an inch and a half from here

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0696_zps38f25db2.jpg

Bolted up in looks like this

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0697_zpsfa01df2e.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0698_zps06abab63.jpg

This modification would not have been necessary if it was not for that third cat.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0699_zps658eb4c3.jpg

As you can see, it is very close to the lip on the pan. I might have to modify that lip a little when done. It will be close

This weekend was productive. We installed the tranny crossmember and pan with the tranny mount in place. No pics, but you have all seen that before. The 1" spacer we used for the 4" lift was taken out. Since we were starting from scratch, we could make the rear output any angle we wanted, so it is within 1° of the pinion angle which is close enough. Here is the driver side motor mount, although not finished yet.

This weekend was productive. Although it may not look it to the casual eye. We set out to put the NP231 tcase in place of the NP247. I thought we should be able to bolt it, but we found it was clocked differently. So we needed to do a little thinking outside of the box on this. First, the nose on the input gear was 3/4" longer on the 247 than the 231, and it had a seal it needed to fit on. Fortunately we can mix and match parts since New Process likes to conserve part design to avoid too much retooling. However when we got into the 231, what a mess.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0715_zps46c0709f.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0718_zps4d6146f0.jpg

There had been some water in there and even made a little rust. Bearings seemed OK, but there was some rust to contend with as well as the little nylon inserts on the shift forks were worn out. Sooooooooooo, we had some cleaning up and repair to do.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0720_zps0e25afda.jpg

The planetaries in the low range used the same gears and input spline, but the nose was longer. So we needed to use the 247 input gear. You can see here that they look identical, and indeed they are except the length.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0719_zps3463958d.jpg

Next we needed to take care of the clocking situation, which we did with an Advance Adapters clocking ring.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0726_zps76ac1e42.jpg

But that pulls the nose of the input out 3/4" which will not allow the input to make contact with the seal on the rear of the transmission, which is needed. So we added a Speedy Sleeve, which makes a new seal surface. We just didn't put it on all the way. It took some precision tapping with the big hammer to get it exactly straight that way, but will work fine.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0727_zps54acd1f0.jpg

Since we were in it and had some extra parts laying around, we added this 2WD low range kit. This Jeep will see a lot of rush hour traffic on Donner Summit and will have less transmission heat with the 2wd low, as well as saving on brakes

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0722_zpsab023e76.jpg

We changed the tstat as well. It is a real PITA to get to, since it is on the intake side of the system. And not a cheap stat either. It seems to be unique to this engine and has its own seal as well as remaining half open at 195°

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0723_zps5d3fac00.jpg

Next on the list was the throttle cable. They were similar, but a little different. We used the TJ pedal and WJ cable and got full throttle operation

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0732_zps7fd58977.jpg

Going to have to wait for the inserts in the shift fork to finish the tcase, but that will go quick once we get them.

Paul and I spent more quality time with the TJ today. Put in the resonator air box, unnecessary everywhere except CA probably. So in it went. Also installed the down and cross over pipes. We will redo the third cat required in CA later. The rest of the day was spent on the driver side fender. There is stuff that bolts on there, and most of it has to do with the vapor canister. There is an addition of stuff in the 99 model year, so it gets a little more complicated. On the WJ, this is a long drawn out affair consisting of the canister, pump and breather. All in all, about 30" long, which is too long for a TJ, which has less room under the hood. So, we made a few changes. There is a battery tray on the driver side and we decided to use this for the canister and associated valve.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0738_zpsd0972ae9.jpg

This looks pretty much like the TJ canister, but there are some minute differences so we used it and modified the rear part of the bracket and welded that down to the tray. The front part of the bracket I made and it utilizes an existing bolt and nutsert from the factory. That way it can be changed. Although it would require removing the fender to do so. In front of it is the valve that operates it. Also on a fabricated bracket utilizing an existing factory bolt and nutsert.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0741_zpsc934fd09.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0744_zps81b0feb4.jpg

Next came the control valve. It would not fit in the battery box space, so we utilized this space just above the sector shaft carrier bearing. I used the stock bracket and cut it, installed a couple of nutserts in it and bolted it from underneath. If you look closely, there is a green cap visible. That is a test port and necessary to have for testing the system.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0740_zps03df256e.jpg

That left a to of real estate on the fender, but it is easy to fill it. To start that, Paul wanted to install his Christmas present.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0746_zps59735f07.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0748_zps6f25fe0b.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0747_zps1cd773b5.jpg

The tank being as long as it is, is interfering with the space used by the windshield washer bottle. But we could not use it there due to the stock WJ air cleaner box, which will be installed later. It doesn't look like much, but that fender was off and on around eight times for fitting and figuring. Next will be the air box, which is also required in CA to pass smog

4.3LXJ
06-15-2014, 03:28 PM
OK, it has been four weeks since the last post, but we have not been idle. In order to pass smog in CA, you have to have the original air box. So I needed to make it fit. Anyone else could probably not have to do this and go directly off the throttle body with a tube and cone filter and save a lot of headache. So I massaged the driver side fender a little

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0796_zpstinwazpb.jpg

And once installed fits in the stock position with the stock air intake hose.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0797_zps1pfcktmu.jpg

Thought we could use an easy efan install, so this fit the bill

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0798_zps8ieivh3c.jpg

New radiator fits it pretty well too

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0799_zpsaapcojwj.jpg

Extension cord will be a problem though.

Well back to reality, this universal fit radiator from Summit Racing is what we went with. It is good for over 300 hp so the 230 hp 4.7 will be cooled nicely. However we do plan once it passes its first smog to bump it up to 290 hp, so the stock 4.0 radiator would not have cut it. It rests on a steel mount on the bottom and will not have to absorb any body flex at the tanks

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0800_zpsgzmnh5v7.jpg

In the middle of all this, we had a bored teenager, so in keeping with family projects, we taught her how to change oil on the YJ

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0808_zpsdnhqeowc.jpg

Then it was on to the TJ

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0809_zpscw42gorf.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0812_zpsv4lhvd18.jpg

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Pauls%20TJ/IMG_0813_zpsuuvwyzur.jpg

Back to reality now, I remade this shroud that we had on the YJ so it fit the new radiator. We found out the hard way the YJ does not have enough alternator to run the Taurus fan. But the 4.7 has plenty of alternator.

Had another productive day. Got the fuel line plumbed in, a sensor on the tranny we broke, ($100) and the transmission and tcase linkage in

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/Cohassett%20Road/IMG_0829_zpstkq4gjqg.jpg

There are plans to build a console later after we get some minor details out of the way, like the smog referee. Linkage works well though.

Relocated the horns to the grill instead of the fender. No room there anymore.

So what's the latest on this, Steve? Been thinking about doing this swap in a yj

4.3LXJ
12-13-2014, 11:48 PM
The latest is: I just got off the phone with the boy. He has a YJ that needs a clutch. So I am trading him rigs Wed and will take the tranny out have the flywheel turned and back together before Christmas. He is showing up the 26 and I think we will get it started then. As far as swaps go, this will work out very clean. However, it is a difficult swap to get the 98 and 99 electrical to work together. So, a better swap is the 5.2L like Wayne has in his TJ. Much easier. You do have to use an aftermarket header on the exhaust. This is not legal in CA so we couldn't do it. However if you have the 5 speed you can do it fairly easily. You will however have to do a similar thing like we did with the radiator because that 4.0 radiator will not cut it with 25% more cubes to cool.

bluedragon436
12-15-2014, 11:52 PM
Got a friend here locally... The one I picked up my "spare" 4.0 from.. who swapped a 5.2L into his YJ that had a 4cyl in it originally... He said it was actually pretty easy swap once you do the mounts and such...

4.3LXJ
12-16-2014, 01:18 PM
Yes, it is easier. However, you cannot make them pass smog in CA. So this is the only way we can make an affordable swap. The 5.2L has an exhaust problem with the stock manifolds. They won't fit between the frame rails, so an aftermarket header needs to be used which won't make it legal here. The 4.7 doesn't have that problem.
