I have seen tons of pics of peoples XJ's with the rear section cut off. We are looking at cutting ours and installing a BEST top shorty of some sort on it, with a roll cage thru out. Has anyone done this? There is a pic oin my albums of what I want to do... any info on tail gate reworking ect would be appreciated..

No cutting but caging is a subject I am familiar with.

If you cut the rear off, you will need to do some caging to maintain the integrity of the unibody. That rear post gives some strength to it.

the 1st thing I am going to do is to strip the interior, except the dash and redo the floor-----gonna clean any bad spots and then prime and paint it with herculite roll on bed lliner----2 coats... Then install a full on roll cage front to rear with the rear bars becoming stantions near the tailgate instead of on the rear wheel wells..... Then i am going to re-inforce the exposed frame memebers under neath with 3 sided angle iron to support the frame...

Still have to figure out a way to hinge the tail gate at the bottom, so it will look halfway decent... But it will be re-inforced fully in the rare section, so i DON;T GET HAT FLEX....WELL i WILL TRY ANYWAY... But thanks for the heads up---you guys been doing this alot longer than me...

Oh I will...she will be up on jack stands as I am gonna swap out the entire suspension and rework the axels and install lockers... A full on re-work...
1st---running gear
2-----start on the interior strip out and rework...
3rd---the body work
4th send out the trans and Xfer case for an over haul
5th--head replace and maybe do the bottom end too---dont know yet---she has lots of miles, but the 4.0 runs out good...

Long rebuild, but itll be worth it---im in nebraska working right now, but ill be home towards the end of oct,,,maybe ill gt a little time to get it started and make progress... Ill post pics of all of it...

Many use a MJ tailgate, I've seen a few reworked/cut rear hatches turned into tailgates

Hey that's pretty cool. Seems like I remember seeing that from your site, but not as good of a shot.

IDK, but I like the fact that I can put a grip of gear in the back of my XJ and it stays DRY!! That is what I own an XJ for. Stuff it full of crap, and haul butt into the mountains to get away from it all. No dissing on the guys with chopped XJs. I know they take a lot of work, it's just not for me!

Honestly, that XJ was plegged with electrical issues........on top of that the motor/transmission seperated the day I brought it to the shop............
If it was a better XJ, it would have gotten a lift.............the wrong hands handled the mantainance on this one, so.........bye bye!!!!
