I bought my 98 XJ a couple weeks ago and have been trying to ignore the noise from the rattling hood prop. I suppose there used to be a plastic or rubber clip? I finally got sick of the noise. Found a bolt in the old bolt pail, wrapped some electrical tape around the end, and then stuffed a rubber washer over the electrical tape. I screwed it into the existing hole on the side of the engine compartment, next to the battery. Not the prettiest fix, but it works, and it took less than 5 minutes and was made entirely of stuff that was already laying around in the garage. https://fbcdn-photos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/s720x720/548741_421366234617841_269747258_n.jpg

Those hood props are a pain. And the hood is heavy. Opening when hot feels like my hands are burning.
The best solution is to use your old liftgate supports from the rear hatch.
They mount easily to the hood and lift it for you. Also supports the hood hand free. On of my favorite mods.

Now that's a good idea!

What kind of brackets do you need to bolt on for this to work??? Any chance you have a part number. I put lifts on an S-10 bed for my bosses electric truck once and we had to drill holes in the frame and put the studs in with bolts to hold them but it was a pain in the rear to do.

Yes, there is some drilling to do. I used self tapping screws and 2 rivets. I would prefer rivets but only used 2 as a test of their strength. So far so good, almost a year now. Brackets could be welded on too.
The underhood heat is not effecting the struts.
New struts are to powerful. An old set works great. The struts have a pound rating. If we can figure out what that rating is for a new set, we could use new ones with an lower rating.
Jeepinoutfitters sells the 'hood lift' but the struts are short like the grand Cherokees and mount near the hinge. With short struts I worry about the wind getting ahold of the hood (ridiculous wind here). The long struts support the hood in the middle and offer much more leverage to hold the hood open and secure.
I spent $20 on 4 brackets, the ball is 10mm.

If 2 are too strong, why not just use the one side, like the stock prop?

I did these last week.

I found the brackets at the PnP. I think the were off a rodeo.http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/17/tujypa4e.jpg

The struts I had from my 98'. They were the old ones. They are still super strong and raise hood on their own. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/17/8u6aba7y.jpg

Total cost was $2 admission to PnP. Guy didn't charge for brackets!

If 2 are too strong, why not just use the one side, like the stock prop?

I live in a high wind environment. One strut on each side is much more secure (No wind flutter) and I feel better working under the hood.
