So I just found out That I actually have 308 gears and not 373 gears, How ever I have an extra trac lock for 355 and up that has 373 gears on it so, I wan't to put in the rear and so the question is. . . . . . . . . . . . Do you need to change the front carrier (dana 30) to go up to 373's as well? or can the dana 30 go up gears without replacing the carrier?

Thanks in advance all help will be great Im new to the gear changing thing!

yes you need a new carrier for the front if it is 3.08

Front and Rear gears must match ONLY if you want to go into 4x4. If you keep it in 2WD you're OK. :rotfl2:

They have to match. I'll let someone else jump in there but I think 3.08 and 3.73 are WAY to far apart to be able to run them like that.

No you're right Mudd, you can't run something like 3.08's and 3.73's. You can usually go a thousandth or two apart, but usually not more. Example, I have 3.54's in my Dana 44 and 3.55's in my Dana 30 - works just fine. However, 3.73 and 3.55's wouldn't work well.

The carrier break is at 3.55:1 those and numerically lower gears used one carrier and 3.73:1 and numerically higher used another carrier. So not only do you need different ring/pinion gears but you need a different carrier as well.

I got my carrier for $50 when I upgraded to the 4.56 gears.
