Chrysler 8.25 V. Ford 8.8

I want to know why anyone with a C 8.25 with 29 spline would need to do a axle swap?? I know that there is not as much after market for the 8.25 but you can get all kinds of Lockers, alloy shafts, and up to 4.88 gears. But I have never heard of one breaking with 35" tires or smaller. Has any one broken their 8.25? I think 8.25 are a even better and easier swap than a 8.8. The 8.8 is not really that much stronger stock either and both have the ability to have disc brakes.

Opinions???

I considered building an 8.8 but found a really good deal on my 8.25. Bent one shaft on 35s only because of wheel hop.

I wouldnt do the swap now unless I got an 8.8 for CHEAP locked and 4:88s.

I don't have a lot of experience, but from what I have read the C8.25 is plenty strong, the "C" clips would be the weak spot. If you do the Grand D35 disc brake upgrade they'll hold the axles in! lol

I want to go to the 35's bad, especially after seeing ChaseK's rig.

I think I can get away with it but I'll have to replace the axles in the D30 eventually.

I wheeled the you-know-what out of my 1989 XJ with 35's... D30 up front, and D35 in the rear.

No Joke, never broke.

Then you are one in a million cause I put 33's on my TJ with 50K miles and the D35 squealed the same week.

I also beat my dana 35 to death. I had 33's and a rear locker on my tj's dana 35 and wheeled it for 4 years on a weekend basis. It never bothered to leak or snap.

It seems to be a hit and miss thing. More hits than misses though, but I've read posts from a handful of people that said the same thing you did. Makes you wonder why a few D35s can handle it and the others can't.

driving style, let off the gass when you are spinning, stuff like that.

the ford 8.8 is a c-clip axle also, but compared to the 1996 1/2 8.25 and up, the 29 splined version, the 8.8 is way stronger. If you arent going over 33s then the 8.25 is just fine. they have lockers and gears that you would need. I have a power trax no-slip in mine, love it!

as far as putting them in, the 8.25 bolt in,

the 8.8...research it, is not that bad to put in but you will have to weld the perches and shock mounts on, and get an adapter for the driveshaft flange on the pinion mount. the brake lines you can get to work, and the emergency cable you can loop it and make it work.

I think you might need a different drive shaft with the 8.25, the pinion sticks out further than the d35, but if you have a lift this might be offset.

I have heard guys "SAY" that the 8.8 is stronger but no can tell me why or how. See the 8.8 is a 31 spline 8.8" ring gear with 3.25" axle tubes and the '95.5 ^ 8.25 is a 29 spline 8.25 ring gear with 3" axle tubes both are c- clip, can have disc brakes, have aftermarket gears and lockers. The 8.8 is a over all easy swap but not nearly as easy as a 8.25. You can also buy 2 8.25 for the price of a 8.8. I have ran 35"s on a stock 27 spline 8.25 and beat the shit out of it with not even a squeak. I think that guys have swapped the 8.25 out to quick to know how much it will take. But I have an 8.8 in the back yard and I'm going to build the 8.25 just like I would the 8.8 and see what it will do.

If you are going to the trouble to put an 8.8 under your rig for strength then go big and slap a D60 under it. You can run 37s and up with a D60.

you can get 8.8s cheap if you are patient with the auto salvages.

as opposed to strength wise, i think if you dont have a heavy right foot and dont stay in the gas when trying stuff, then you can get a D35 to work. But, there is that piece of mind knowing that you have something a lil stronger back there. and 31 splines as opposed to 29 splined is a difference. I have a 8.25 with a powertrax no-slip and love it and wont change it for anything, except to get deeper gears :D

So do they have 4.88s out for the 8.25 now?

I am thinking of grabbing a dana 35 and swapping it in just cuz i can find lockers for it super cheap. I know I can keep it alive cuz i don't have a heavy foot.

I would not swap in a D35 if it was free with a locker and my choice of gears!! They are GARBAGE!
