Hello this will be my chronicle of my jeep build. I am starting with a mostly stock XJ the owner before I got it chopped the center console and put in a weird brake line going to the passenger side front brakes.

One the the bigger unknowns about it is that the last owner did over heat it "a lot" and developed a miss in cylinder 1. they did a compression test and found #150 in all cylinders except cylinder 1 which was #110.

The going thought when Bought it was that it is a miss do to a scored piston but right now we are leaning to valve issues .

Well enough of my rambling here is what I have done so far and will/ hope to do in the future.

* Put Back in stock center console
* upgraded battery cables to 2 gauge

Pics of the process in the next couple of posts.

My to do list

As soon as Get the parts / money list / more facts

-Tune up Plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor
-Pull head and get valves looked at and repaired
-Head lights and harness
-Over head console (have console just need to get some misc parts)
-Direct form bat 6 gauge wires in to cab for radios and stuff (Have all parts)
-NMO antenna mount(s)
-Full size spare
-Finish electric up grades (better alternator and wire from alt
-Upgraded brake lines

The next list is the after I get engine running better and money list

= Detours backbone
= A pillar lights
= Lift kit
= Dual batteries set up
= Snokel
= Set of 5 winter/snow tires
= Roll cage
= Winch

All sounds good to me. Can you just buy tires that work as everyday tires and snow/winter tires? Dont wanna sound dumb about it, but its just not something we know about down here in S.E TX

You can get "all weather" tires that work ok on snow and ice but for best performance winter tires are best.

The best winter tires I ever had was a set of Michelins

Good list and a great start on the console. Your plans are rather ambitious which I respect.

I went the the junk yard to get parts today.

I got the wire harness and bracket for the over head console and this.

Rather than make a whole new post I will put how I put it in here.

first you need a radio.

http://imageshack.us/a/img818/6428/20121120151745.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/818/20121120151745.jpg/)

This one is from a Jeep grand cherokee

Then bolt it in only 1 bolt will line up if you want you can make a tab to go to the second bolt space.

http://imageshack.us/a/img191/2043/img1377fp.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/191/img1377fp.jpg/)

then put the cover on the check were you need to trim.

http://img844.imageshack.us/img844/2983/trimv.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/844/trimv.jpg/)

I had to trim the places circled in red.

With trimming all this took me about two minutes or so. For 12 bucks I got a radio with a cd and tape player not bad if you ask me. :D:cheerleader:

A little bit of an update.

Friday I bought 6 rims that my go to mechanic had on one of his junked grand cherokees (yes he has his own little jy).
http://imageshack.us/a/img231/9591/wheel1timberline.th.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/231/wheel1timberline.jpg/)

Only to find out that they are from a 99 WJ with the 5x5 bolt pattern. :bang:

So they will go back on Monday.

I got the owners manual That I found for a song on flee bay and started on the splice job for me over head console. all the part for the over head console are from the same 98 XJ the person that got to it first cut some of the wire for the console so I get to use the art of splicing on them!

Either Monday or Tuesday I will go back to the jy to grab the head liner and look out for a rim or two.

Over the weekend i was able to do a bit more on the jeep.

Removed and replaced the 97 headliner with a 98 headliner.

Installed the 98 overhead console wiring harness

Installed a MNO mount and antt for my 2 meter ham radio.

started on installing the head liner.

added to the growing pile o'parts and supply s for the work need on the head.

-6 quarts castrol gtx 10w 30 oil
-microgard oil filter Came free with the oil!
-6 champion "copper plus" spark plugs
-BWD select wire set

The only things I need now for the tune up are a belt, cap and rotor.

started the gathering of part needed for conversion to rear disk brakes

-8 (new) ZJ wheel studs

Well not much to say for wrenching time on the jeep yet.

But I did start to get parts ordered for my head light and headlight harness upgrade!

From Amazon,

AutoPal Euro Clear H6054 7x6 Inch 200mm Headlights Pair H4 Bulbs
Amazon.com: AutoPal Euro Clear H6054 7x6 Inch 200mm Headlights Pair H4 Bulbs Non-Sealed H6014/H6052/H6054: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51%2Bkg5eLF1L.@@AMEPARAM@@51%2Bkg5eLF1L

For the harness after looking at the reviews on Amazon for the putco harness I decided that it might work out better if I just made my own.

For the harness I will be using this website a guide http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoHeadlightLoom.htm

I have on order the fuze holders and H4 plugs.

on the list of stuff to pick up still is,

10 gauge wire both red and black

16 gauge wire for the relay hookups

2 40 amp relays (1 high beams 1 for low)

On hand I have the split loom stuff and the misc terminals and connectors.

My plans all way seem to fall a part at the last second or at least that the way it feels some days. how doe this relate to my Jeep you might ask well let me tell you.

I have planed to start on the cylinder head project Monday 12/17/12 after work I would meet up with my minion aka little brother (a very good mechanic) at a heated shop to start of the project. Sounds great right? well this plan has a couple of flaws 1, my brother is not much of a morning person 2, little sleep before work and a crapy night at work make for a long night.

So now you are thinking oh great here he goes rambling on about nothing. Yep you got it.

But good news !

I tasked my Minion to get the plugs, plug wires, cap and rotor changed.
After that was done guess what?.... The CEL went out ! I was not able to check the plugs my self but the rotor had major carbon deposits on it.

so that helps a little it still run a bit rough at times so I will still be taking the head off and getting the valves redone ( if needed and not a scored piston)
this just just put it off a bit.

Greetings!

I finally have some more to post !

I got most of the parts needed for my H4 head light conversion.

Here is the web site I got most of my info from and lead onn were ot get part. How to Headlight Loom (http://jeep-xj.info/HowtoHeadlightLoom.htm)

The parts I have so far.

http://s14.postimage.org/glubr9srl/IMG_1480.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Left to right top to bottom

-H4 conversion head light bulbs (only 1 shown) (as featured on the XJ talk pod cast episode 59)
The head light came with the bulbs for now it will keep the bulbs that are in them and if need be get better ones later.

http://s14.postimage.org/sozneu3tt/IMG_1481.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

http://s14.postimage.org/8j0qtoxk1/IMG_1482.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

10 Gauge wire red and black for the power and ground leads. 14 Gauge wire white for relay hook ups.

http://s14.postimage.org/5rhh32z1d/IMG_1484.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Waterproof silicon for to help water proof wire and stuff.

http://s14.postimage.org/f0jnd77xd/IMG_1485.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

2 10 gauge blade type fuze holders (water resistant can be made "waterproof" with a bit of silicon)

http://s14.postimage.org/4ezs171lt/IMG_1486.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

H4 headlight plugs. They came with leads attached and terminals so you use your own wire which is what I am going to do.

http://s14.postimage.org/m6befnh0h/IMG_1487.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

http://s14.postimage.org/j0qspfye9/IMG_1488.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

The only part I'm waiting on is the relays. I found these on ebay that are on order now I will be using 2 relays one for high beams one for low beam.

I definately have to say that the H4 upgrade was one of the best upgrades I've done.. I picked up the LMC harness myself... due to lack of time to build my own harness... now I wish I had, cause I can't use the high beams on my setup, if I do when I go back to the low beams, I have high and low beams on at the same time.... then again don't really need brights too much due to how bright my low beams are... Which wattage bulbs di you go with for your upgrade??

The IPF housing and 80/110 watt bulbs are great. I still think they should be brighter than they are, but I don't think "I hate these dim Jeep lights!" any more.

BTW, I did find that the LMC GM truck harness ($40 shipped) and the Silverstar lights are so close in brightness to the IPF's well if I had it to do over again, well $80 > $160!!!!

Well my jeep just might make me go crazy.

I got it back together last night! the valves were a real learning experience to say the least.

The last person to change the oil put both the filter and drain plug WAY to tight.:bang::bang::out::mad:

after I got it all back together when to try and start it .... no luck not getting any spark. after looking through the pics that were taken while taking it apart I might have found the problem but we will see.

Progress has been made!

I finally got to do some work on the jeep! for the last week or so she has been running 100 to 120°. so way under normal temp without side air temp running around -10 to 10° the need for heat is very much on my mind.

I tried the easy stuff first add coolant and burped the system as much as I could still no heat. :bang::banghead:

my last hope was that in was some simple like a stuck t-stat. therefore friday I stopped by the stealership to pick up an OEM t-stat (should have changed it when I did the head) then to o'reillys to pick up some coolant. then life got busy again.

Fast forward to today I had planned just to do my head light upgrade but i had my minion along and all the the change the t-stat and give it a good flush and what did we find? A stuck t-stat! Well enough of my rambling here are some pics. Posted in no real order.

Greetings XJ Talk ! the last few months between school aand work I have not had much time to work on my jeep. I did have some work done on it by a full time pro mechanic (radiator and batt change). How ever this weekend that changed a little. I started by buying some supplies coolant, coolant system flush/cleaner fluid and misc stuff.

Then I changed my U-joint on the front diff and got my Astro start working!:bacondance: (I will get a few pics up later:camera:) I still need to do the flush and fill but at least i have all the stuff needed now.

Next up will be brake work in the near future:mad0090::bang:.

After that photo dump you might be wondering what all I did to it.

Well here is the list,

Changed heater core

Removed black side trim

Rerouted a couple of wires and my coax cable

changed the radiator cap

I now have heat again!!!!! however now my steering wheel is on up side down and the radio will only play cd and tapes no AM or FM plus i cant change the time:bang::crazy::hmmmm2:

Any one have any idea on how to fix either of those problems?

NW99XJ

The drag link coupler needs to be adjusted to get your steering wheel back to "normal"
It's just two bolts (near the pitman arm) then rotate that coupler until the steering wheel is where it needs to be.
Re-tighten, and you're good.

http://www.cherokeeforum.com/members/paco182-7682/albums/stuff/32556-jeep-steering.jpg

The radio issue sounds like you need to plug your antenna back into the stereo....
If its plugged in there, then there is another connection near the glove box or passenger side kick panel. make sure thats fully seated together.

http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h328/jbchill1/antennarouting1.jpg (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/jbchill1/media/antennarouting1.jpg.html)

http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h328/jbchill1/antennarouting2.jpg (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/jbchill1/media/antennarouting2.jpg.html)

As for not being able to SET the clock...that just sounds like either user error (sorry) ...or a faulty button. I'd refer to the user manual on the proper technique to set the clock (dont know it off the top of my head) ..... otherwise....
If its that the clock wont STAY set....
Then it could be a voltage issue.
1. Check ignition-off draw fuse. Replace fuse, if required.
2. Check for loose or corroded radio connector. Repair, if
required.
3. Check for battery voltage at radio connector. Repair wiring, if required.
4. Check for continuity between radio chassis and a known good ground.
There should be continuity. Repair ground, if required.

Hope this helps... good luck.

I have a bit an update and an announcement!

First the update.

I got the front brakes worked on new pads, rotors, wheel studs and lug nuts!
You might ask why the lug nut and studs? Good question.

For the answer I will tell a bit of a story. I was not on the way back home after work going about 60 MPH down a two lane highway when the front end vibes started to get worse then they have been since I got the truck. On a side note after changing the u joint on the front drivers side the vibe had gone down a fair amount. Now normal with my vibe if I turn the wheel a bit to the passenger side it will get a bit better so I tried that with no real effect either way. Then it got way better! How ever a half second later I see my front drivers side wheel go rolling off to the other side of the road and in to the ditch.

A real oh crap moment for sure I did have the presence of mind not to slam on the brakes and just coasted to the side of the road. I found 1 of of the lug nuts and a neighbor was able to lend me 2 from his Jeep the rotor had a good part of it ground off and was flat on the bottom. My wheel and tire was ok and no damage to the axel or calipers.

I took some lug from Memento_Vivere's Jeep (now sitting in the front yard part apart long story that involves ice and stupid friend tricks) so I could at least use my jeep for work and to get to a shop to have it looked at.
When I did get it to a shop they said it needed/needs new pads, rotors, studs and lugnuts (all taken care of) and the rear brakes are on the rivets and the steering box is going out. The rear brakes I had an idea about but the steering box was a bit of a surprise.

I'm thinking that the steering box is were at least part of my vibes are coming from. Just adding to my list of stuff I need to fix on Her.

But enough of my rambling on to my announcement!

I will be putting rear disk brake on! I have most of the part already backing plates, e-brake hardware, e-brake cables, soft lines, and Wheel studs. All but the wheel studs came from Grainofsalt on here. I did get calipers as well but I think that they will end up just being for cores.

The parts I still need are pads, rotors and either parts to rebuild the calipers or new calipers while i have the axles out I will replace the seals as well.

My to do list

Maintenance / broken

* gas filler tube shield thing fabbed (old one is broken)
* replace clock spring
* new rear bump stops
* new shock all around

As soon as Get the parts / money list / more facts

-NMO antenna mounts 1 done
-Full size spare
-Finish electric up grades (better alternator and wire from alt)
-storage box for back

The next is the after I get money and time list

= Detours backbone
= A pillar lights
= Lift kit
= Dual batteries set up Part done
= Snokel
= Set of 5 winter/snow tires
= Roll cage
= Winch
=????????
=profit

My next steps will be to change the clock spring and start on the dual batt set up.

I have a tray form another Cherokee that at least to start with I will use for the tray. The wiring will depend on weather I go with a diode or solenoid isolator.

For the isolator i have narrowed it down to a few choices.

500 amp solenoid
Amazon.com: PAC PAC-500 500-Amp Relay Battery Isolator: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41zhJbkO6tL.@@AMEPARAM@@41zhJbkO6tL

200 amp solenoid
Amazon.com: PAC PAC-200 200-Amp Relay Battery Isolator: Car Electronics@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41wfidZt3iL.@@AMEPARAM@@41wfidZt3iL

200 amp diode
Amazon.com: NOCO IGD200HP 200 Amp Battery Isolator: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41M8Peb8hfL.@@AMEPARAM@@41M8Peb8hfL

The 200 amp point is due to the fact I will hopefully soon upgrade to either a ZJ 135 amp alt or 160 darango alt and it is better to go a bit over board then too small.
Any thoughts? comments?

Hello again XJ talk!

I have got a few things done on my jeep!

First I swapped my steering gear box out from a 1995 XJ.
http://s20.postimg.org/fkzgvvvz1/IMG_1776.jpg (http://postimage.org/)

Also with that a new power steering fluid return line and used but better high pressure line.

while doing that job I got new front sway bar links and frame bushings. There is a long story about parts and broken tools that I will not bring up now.

My fender on the drivers side has been only held on by friction after my run in with the ground after losing my wheel a while back so I took them and the side bumper part off!

So I got some work done on the XJ.

I got the leafs disassembled and the rear axle of the leafs with little to no problems. the shock on the other hand not so much....

first this happened 3 out of the 4 bolt broke that way.

Eh on big problem there I was kind of planning to do BPEs any way so now it looks like this. Also the cross member the bolts are on was FULL of dirt and rocks (more on that later)

Grade 8 nuts, bolts, and washers used there over kill maybe but it was under a dollar upgrade.

the shock mount to the axle were super crusty and will have to be cleaned up before having new shocks on them.

I don't have much for pics of my work with the leaf springs but here is one.

Yeah I know it's a great pic ;)

Here is the leaf pack assembled.

For the rear I have new shocks, bump stop, u-bolts, and misc hardware

One of the things brought up by the shop that was working on my head was there were a couple of stuck valves and that the fuel system should be cleaned / flushed.
So I drop the the tank and what do I find?...

Dirt lots of compacted dirt and rocks

After a bit of work the tank is looking like this.

As for the head I'm still waiting on a head from the machine shop with now word on lead time.
