I'm thinking about added protection/strength on the lower quarter panels behind the rear wheels. But can't make my mind up what to do.

Has anybody done something special here.

Any pics would be useful!

Cheers! :D

Here is a shot of my rear Detours bumper. It looks short because it was cut to fit with Bushwackers. Of course the Bushwackers would be the weak point with this set up.

Now this is part of the rear bumper, so it is very strong, however I have seen a write up where someone did this and just screwed a similar bent piece of metal to this area. Not as strong, but still good protection.

Found it!

I'm doing the cut it all off and weld method. When I get it done I'll post some pics

Mine was cut off by the PO, but I spot welded in some sheet metal, and then sealed it all up with flashing sealant.

HTH!! The pics aren't the best, but they were actually of the gas tank skid and rear bumper, so the patch work was not the focus of the shot.

Why is this a good thing to do? Get rid of the rust, more travel room for the rear wheels?

When you trim a lot, it opens these boxed areas up. The best solution is to remove them all together, IMHO. It also gives you less "soft" sheet metal to mangle on rocks, which is why rock crawler guys are the ones that do it the most. HTH!!

I usually try to do things that make the most sense or I will add or take away the things I do not think are needed. The rear quarter section is just in the way. It makes it easier to get to your leaf & shackle bolts and gives more clearance. Not to mention mine were rusted out bad that is why I could not do the fold thing after I cut out all the rust there was nothing to fold.

My C-rok bumper covers mine. I do like the cut look too. Wish I could post pics but having trouble doing so, on this site.

I'm not sure what problem you are having, but have a look at this and see if it helps.

You can add these (http://www.rocklizardfabrications.com/cherokee_gila_monster_armor.htm) to your rear quarters ... Gila Monster quarter guards. Sroll to center page.

or these (http://rustysoffroad.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=rustys&Product_Code=RA-JS78-XJ&Category_Code=xj_skid) -

or these (http://jeepinoutfitters.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=1427)

But I added a full wrap around bumper instead because I needed the bumper anyway.
