My 1988 Comanche Renix 4.0 has had a very low and rough idle for awhile now, then it started dieing at stoplights so time to clean!

This is actually a very easy job to do and as long as you have a set of Torx bits (As a Jeep owner you do have a set... right?) it only costs the price of a can of carb cleaner.

First, remove the breather tube.
It's the black slinky looking thing.

Next unhook the wiring, three plugs and done.
Now remove the entire throttle body, three Torx bolts and it's off.

I cleaned them with a tooth brush and carb cleaner, did a good job.

Don't forget to clean where the IAC lives.

After cleaning up everything, put it back together.

Success!
Love when a project works the way it should.
The Comanche went from idling around 300 to 400 RPM and dieing to this!

I agree, great write up. I have 213K on the odometer so I'll be mine is due as well. Is throttlebody cleaner something I should be able to pick up at any auto parts store?

I just did my throttle body, and took about two hours! But also did the 60 mm smoothed out. Can't wait for the results.

Wow my '94 Cherokee Sport has been having a small bit of rough idle even though the RPM's are around where they should be. Suppose mine are due for a cleaning since it's at 262,000 miles damn near. Great visuals and a great topic in general! Thanks for the post!

I used this write up as a guide to clean mine and it is the best! I did mine about 2 months ago but just wanted to thank you so much for posting this!

Being the factory didn't put very good markings below 1k rpm its easier to tell you where the needle will be. See the two smaller hash marks above the bigger one noting 0? The needle should be barely above the small mark closest to 1k rpm.

I haven't looked it up but i would say 600-700rpm is normal.

I did a throttle body clean this weekend and the response is impressive! Much thanks for the excellent write-up!
