I've been wanting to install an air horn on my XJ, which I think is legal, also I was thinking about a PA system.

Whats it for?

The air horn would be the scare the piss out of people talking on the cell phones while doing 40 mph in a 50 zone, fast lane. :driving:

Of course there are those people that signal for a left hand turn, don't move into the center turning lane until they get to where they are going to turn blocking the FAST lane.

The winch bumper will be the last resort if the air horn doesn't work. :rotfl2:

Wait, was my answer contingent on the information you were going to share?

I have been looking these too. It would be great to scare the crap out of people

A PA would be a lot more fun and versatile than a air horn. I just don't know if if one that could do 120 db would be as affordable as an air horn.

We can't have any fun in Oregon huh Audio. PA systems, Air horns, and those led lights are all illegal. Can't even tint your widows very dark, even that is illegal.

I like that one too.
I have an airhorn on my Miata because you could hardly hear the OEM horn from 15 feet away, but you can this airhorn. It was purchased from a Miata source but I can get you a link if you are interested. It is no where as loud as that TJ horn though.

i think most of those things are at the cops discresion the chances of getting ticketed for it is prolly slim unless you drive by the hospital and lay on the horn

i had a cheapo wally world one with a lil compressor and it got full of mud and quite working. it wasnt that loud and sounded more like a boat horn. Needless to say i havent had a horn for probably a year lol. flowmaster Dual exhuast at 4000 rpms sounds loud enough for me lol

I saw a post somewhere about mounting an air tank above the rear diff. Can anyone point me to the right sized and type of tank? I'm assuming you need something a little more stout than one of those 10 gallon tanks from wally world.

I was going to mount it and mount a refill point somewhere accessable without crawling under the jeep and just fill it with my air compressor in the garage. Later I'll mount up a air compressor in the cargo area and let it feed that tank. Hmmm I guess I'm going to need a pressure cut off or a gauge up front.

Ok I found the Viair (.5 through 5) gallon tanks. Anyone have any experience with these? Prices seem ok.

Not the Viair specificly but I use an old empty freon tank and it will hold 125 PSI and that is my spare air on the trail.

So did you ever do either one?

I have everything but a way to mount a valve to fill up the air tank, that includes the air horn. Never could find a mountable fitting, so I decided the project would be put on hold until I bought the air compressor. It will be easier to install (except finding a place for the air compressor) anyway.

I'll update this post when it's done.

PAs are pretty easy. Mount the speaker under the hood, plug it into the back side of the CB. Airhorns are a bit more difficult.

Oh I was talking about a PA system with 100 watts or more power. Something that would equal a very loud air horn.

Air horns are fairly simple if you have the a/c to oba conversion. Simply add an airline with a 1 way valve that runs to the tank for your air horn. When ever you use the horn, just turn your oba pump on to charge it. Simple

No A/C in Houston is suicide except during winter (which is two days in February!) :D

Probably irrelevant to the initial point of this thread but i have both on my jeep.

The air horn is just a cheapy from Harbor Freight. Two trumpets and 135db, i believe. Surely louder than the stock horn but mediocre against an expensive system.

The pa is just part of the Code 3 siren i have hidden in my console.

And, it comes out a 100w speaker underhood. Trust me, its loud.

Our trucks at work use a Whelen pa with 2 speakers mounted on the push bar. They are very loud.

XJ Wheeler: more pics of the mounting of your under hood PA? Also which did you use and is it water resistant?

The PO of my XJ installed a PA system that the install looks terrible, but its pretty loud....have not gotten around to cleaning up that nest of wires yet, but the PA horn is pretty large.

As for the pictures, sorry. That was the only one up close and i don't have a way right now to take more. But i can tell you. It came with a bracket mounted on it that had holes drilled in it. I simply drilled some holes (2) in the drivers side wheel well and bolted it down.

Its just like this one, only add age and rust.:D I have no idea on the water resistance. It came in a vehicle i bought.

Nope. I did figure out that I couldn't find the stuff I needed to be able to fill the tank manually, so until I get a on board air compressor this is on hold.

Frankly I've been fighting the running hot problem instead of doing the other stuff. Right now it's fix the massive oil leak problem.
