I have this posted over at Comanche Club. I figured I would share it with you fine folks. The wording is going to seem weird. I started on this back in March and im copy and pasteing the text and pics.

New build thread with actual progress happening!

Circa: 2008

I bought this truck a few years ago. I moved from Northern MN to Casper, Wyoming a few years ago to work as a welder for a company that builds mining equipment.

I was looking at CL one day and spotted this truck on there for 800 bucks. Drove 200 miles in a snowstorm to go look at it at a creepy junkyard in Cheyanne by myself. I bought it the next weekend and drove it 200 miles home. (to casper) Truck had 212k. 88/4.0/pukey/2wd.

I ended up moving back home shortly after buying this pretty much rust free, awesome running, grandpa owned since new, truck. A buddy of mine's boss drives OTR; he hauled it home for me.

Pic the day after I got it at my apartment in Casper.

After I got it home to MN. With the painted snowflake wheels gone! Overlooking a local steel mine.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/MJLeodidous.jpg

I used the truck as a couple times a week DD for work which was a 40 mile one way commute. I did regular small fixes on the truck but it proved its stone dead relibility over and over.

Changed the rear main seal on a sheet of plywood in my parents dirt driveway was the biggest fix to date. Did nothing but change oil and put gas in, in 2009, 2010. 2011, I found some turbines with decent tires and mounted them up.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/8ad2ccbb.jpg

Pulls my ATV trailer nice.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/b314c3f5.jpg

Sold my DD XJ. Been driving my CTD as a DD most of this winter. Working on my MJ plow truck and wheeling XJ took up most of my time this winter. Finally got the garage cleaned out last week and pulled it inside. Started pulling parts.

2wd front gone!

Ordered some parts,

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/4b41ed3a.jpg

Thats pretty much all I got for now.

Plans: "Restomod"
Combination IRO/Hell Creek suspension parts to get to 3" of lift
New UCAs and LCAs
New ball joints, hubs, brakes on 98 XJ HP Dana 30, 3.55
New brake lines
Replace all hoses/vaccum lines
Valve cover (97+ steel) with new gasket
Open cooling conversion
Fix Drivers door hinge
New driver front fender
Might replace doors or at least the driver door
New bumpers F and R JCR front basic and homebrew rear bumper with receiver hitch
Get rid of junky tool box and replace with MJ rollbars or new toolbox
265/75/16 tires on TJ Rubicon wheels
Chysler 8.25 swap with disc brakes
Bright White paint
New windshield and rear slider
New WJ master cylinder/booster (gotta do more research on brakes)
Maybe a clutch (hoping this one will make it to the trans swap)

These are the plans for now to get the Jeep roadworthy again. I have not decided what I would like to do for a transmission/t-case yet so it will stay 2wd for now. I plan to use as a DD in the warm months.

Future hopeful plans,
NSG370/NV3550/AX-15 swap with 231 or 242 case
Line X bed liner
Interior work, rebuild bench seat, new steering wheel, shift boots
4:10 gears (axles have 3.55s now)
Bushwacker Flat Flares

Im not very good at telling 'stories' like this so please if I missed something important, please speak up. :wavey:

Stay tuned...

Worked for a bit today to finish up the front suspension save for the track bar. Got a call to go into work tomorrow so It killed my ju ju for the day.

Back on four wheels for now.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/5681785c.jpg

Also spent a little time attempting to clean up the greasy mess on the drivers side of the engine compartment and the frame rail where the track bar mounts and back. Had a beer and called it a day.

Still gotta order spring perches and Hell Creek 3" leafs. Maybe next week.

Called Hell Creek today to order my 3" lift leaf springs.

2 weeks late. Now I may have to wait up to 6 weeks for them. :wall: Oh well. Talked too a guy by the name of Tom for about a half hour on the phone. Very nice guy!! I couldnt help but order the springs from him. Hes "Hell Creek" on here.

Anyway, since Im probably not going to be seeing my suspension till the end of April or beginning of May, I started working on other things. Replaced the two vacuum harnesses today, along with installing a 97+ valve cover with new fancy fel pro gasket. Ran some engine flush through the engine, and changed the oil.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/2268e881.jpg

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/961f9297.jpg

Looking at this last pic, it should be white in the battery compartment. I need to find a good degreaser...I've tryed most everything I can use with my low pressure garden hose. Think ill have to load it up and haul it to a carwash....

Also did some research on brake upgrades. Picking up a master/booster out of a 01 WJ tomorrow. Should be able to get that bolted in, then Ill be on the hunt for a Liberty to steal the rear brakes off of for the disc swap on the 8.25 this truck is getting.

Found my tires that im going to run on this truck. Jeep club member bought a new tow pig (traded a LB7 D-max in for a 6.7 Mega CTD) and took his tires off his old truck before he let it go. 265/75/16 Hankook Dynapro ATs. Once my buddy buys my built D44, ill pick them up. Sometimes deals just fall into your lap....

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/6b317ee4.jpg

Got a small electric pressure washer and some more degreaser and went to town under the hood. Looks good now. Did I take a pic no. This is the only one I have. Box is coming off tomorrow.

Finally got a solid day of work on this! :rock on:

First project was to get the WJ Master/Booster installed.

Used a step bit to drill hole out to 5/8.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/75ae5884.jpg

Little firewall pinch seam massaging.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/4e31f9ce.jpg

Next project was to get the IRO Double Shear Track Bar installed and finish up the front suspension. (for now)

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/03aea050.jpg

Box coming off.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/d7541330.jpg

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/2607dfbc.jpg

Bought some of this after 3 hours of sanding on the paint and really not getting anywhere.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/b449897e.jpg

Tried it out on a spare (junk) tailgate I had laying around. (Not yours Ben..)

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/226135c4.jpg

You can see in this picture that stripper stuff made short work of the hockey stick stickers on the side of the box. Also takes the paint off, right to the millscale. I will still sand down the whole box. Found some bondo, in goofy spots around the gas filler door. Factory maybe?!

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/d4e0d0a6.jpg

That was the day. I have a solid few hours of pressure washing to do on the truck and finish stripping paint off the rest of the truck. Then off to body work, and finally paint. Gotta go get a new driver fender yet and some material to fix the drivers door hinges.

Did a bunch of powerwashing after I pulled the bed off.

Some awesome welding skill I found

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/243fab58.jpg

Check out the heavy spatter! Wow!

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/98042fe7.jpg

Pulled the drivers door, driver fender, header panel and radiator yesterday. No pics, you guys seen that before... I have some hinge work to do and I have to replace the drivers side fender. Will be going to open cooling system.

On a side note, my Hell Creek springs shipped today! :rock on:

Got the new springs in the mail last week.

But I couldnt really do nothing till I ordered spring perches for the donor 8.25. Quick run to Ruff Stuff site took care of that in the form of a 3" axle tube simple swap kit. Very nice kit; almost didnt want to weld on these fancy plates!

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/c80643fe.jpg

This was extremely easy with the bed off! I carefully unbolted all the brake lines and such.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/ada71079.jpg

Notice my awesome pink project admirring chair. I sit in that and drink beer and stare at my project. I have a green one too but the pink one is more comfy for some odd reason!

Perches and shock mounts installed.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/e830f62d.jpg

Axle loaded in the Eliminator to be brought in for sand blasting later this week.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/93faf0dc.jpg

Heading off on a vacation next week so there will be no forward progress for a bit. :(

Next up is a new aluminum raditor, hoses, water pump, t-stat, and the conversion to an open cooling system. -boring stuff-

Axle is blasted and painted with the first coat. Gotta run to town tomorrow to get another can of paint.... I hope to get the axle back in the rig before I take off on vacation...see what happens I guess. Ill snap a pic tomorrow.. Just hate to be tooooooo much a photo whore....:D

Took a day of vacation to get caught up with somethings around the house. Wanted to mow grass but the freak out of nowhere thunderstorm shut that down. So perfect time to throw the MJ back together quick to get it on its own wheels.

I painted the 8.25, and also my Hell Creek springs due to some slight surface rust.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/f1efeea2.jpg

Bro in law stopped over this morning to help me set the box back on the truck to see how its going to look.

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/5983e888.jpg

I think it looks great.

Next on the list is getting it running again with a new water pump, raditor, (open cooling).

Then the bodywork and paint. Something I have NEVER done before.... :(

I do plan, just for heck of it, to get a estimate on a pro paint job. But I really want to learn how to do it myself...

Progress is looking good.. You could try contacting local technical schools.. as they sometimes do pretty good deals on paint jobs.... I know our local tech school even pops out the dents when you drop it off for the paint, for no extra charge..

I know its been ALONG time since I updated this. Ive been busy catching these:

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/6BCEB6E4-8E3C-4F37-9CDA-59F6EFCE6733-2514-000006ABB71981C6.jpg

and these

to work on this thing! I do have a few months worth of some minor things I was able to get done..

Little body work on the box. Skim of bondo in a few spots..

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/D97F0BB6-B4E5-40BB-BEC3-13119C3E4354-2514-000006AA70C8D415.jpg

What I found on the drivers side near the fuel door... Truck must have been in a accident at one time. The "B" pillar and the the door where covered in bondo..

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/E690246C-CD94-4DBA-AC8C-8341B2D7D1D2-2514-000006AA5D4CF25D.jpg

Fixed the cracked door hinge. I cut the top one right off and rewelded; bottom, I was able to get full penetration after grinding out the crack..

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/A8F61770-63E7-4047-AACC-3335C3474974-2514-000006AA4FB6AFA6.jpg

Underhood work getting closer.. New H2O pump, t-stat housing....

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/845E5371-A85B-409C-B207-9226F0E9D608-2514-000006AACBAAAB20.jpg

Above was all done about a month or two ago....

Skip forward too today...Started the day early to get the rest of my painting done. I had the front axle back out for sand blasting and painting. I through that back in this afternoon. I replaced the balljoints, calipers, rotors, pads, and hubs. Ran into a problem on the drivers side with one of the caliper mount bolt holes being stripped. After I discovered it (again) I now remember that when I took it apart originally, it was stripped and made a mental note to fix or find a different knuckle. Thats the problem with getting too excited, too quick on a project....Ha!

I started to put the truck back together.. Box is back on. Fuel tank back in with all new rubber lines. New DS fender on. Header panel back on. About 12p I called in quits and I remembered to take a few pics..Starting to look like a truck again! Finally!

http://i1021.photobucket.com/albums/af332/xjrev10/C2E4DE78-7FA4-4655-B06E-68665D0D5B3C-2514-000006AA3F29F6BE.jpg

I didnt mask off the windshield for painting due to it needing a replacement before I drive the truck. The passenger side of the axle is not yet done because of a bonehead move I made with the lower balljoint, my press and the rubber boot on the joint after 5pm on a Sunday.

Unrrelated to this project but fun MJ pics nonetheless!

Using the plow rig to move the boat outa the little garage for cleaning...

Wrecked the caliper mounting threaded holes on the DS knuckle today. Live and learn. I messed with it and made it worse.

Found a 'new' knuckle, getting it tomorrow. And bringing home another 8.25 for something..

I was able to get my hands on a set of D30 knuckles this week from a club member. Wrangler parts on my MJ now...

Anyway, got them sandblasted and painted up all purty and finally installed along with reman calipers, drilled and slotted rotors, pads, new hubs, and balljoints.

Bolted the DS back in and drove it 3 feet backwards, and 3 feet forward in the garage. First time its moved under its own power since this spring!
Here is what it looks like today with all the suspension in and all the bolts tight. (Save for the trackbar..)

Anybody wanna talk me out of using 97+ doors? I have 1 nice 96- passenger side door (off this truck), 1 door driver side 96- that is all bondo (off this truck), and one drivers side 96- door that needs some body work like holes welded, bad dent to fix, and a little rust.

I have 2 almost mint 97+ doors sitting in my storage area....with the strikers. How hard is it to find manual internals for these things? I think I have seen one 97+ XJ with crank windows..

Also tossing around using the black interior out of my 87 Chief in this truck. Its all there besides the mini console being cracked. I guess Id like to make sure I could get a black mini console before I did the whole swap and end up with one missing piece..

looking nice and shinny. As far as the door guts go, they are interchangeable. Not sure about the 97+, but earlier doors had the stuff pop riveted in with 1/4" rivets, which take a pneumatic riveter. However I have swapped guts with 1/4 X 1/2" allen head screws and nylock nuts on the back. Worked like it was supposed to.

Cleaned up the garage today do to the 50 degree weather we are having. Drove the truck outside for a little sun!

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/31/5y7ahyme.jpg

First time it's been outside since paint. It actually looks extremely nice; from 10 feet away!!! Anyway, I bought something from another member to kick this project off again...

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/03/31/qyhehy4u.jpg

Black mini console. The only part I needed to have a complete black interior. I looked at the donor truck today and I will be needing a headliner too.

Things left to do....

Have to figure out what in doing for doors. Hitting a swap meet and putting out as many feelers as I can. Either manual 97+ doors or one drivers door in nice condition is what's needed. Also weatherstripping.

Shocks. Thinking Bilstein 5100 shocks.

Rear brakes. I bought some disc brake parts from a ZJ that ill have to mod to work.

Fender flares. Flat style is on my mind still.

Rampage Headlights

Diff covers. Ruff Stuff will get the nod.

IRO steering.

That list is in order of importance to me. Glass will fall in there somewhere too.. Along with exhaust.

Almost forgot. Ben (Neohic) built me some kick ass looking bumpers in trade for one of my extra mJs that never was going to get done. I'll post pics when they are installed and painted!

Goal is by the 4th of July, this thing should be road ready! Fingers crossed!

All tore apart for cleaning. The bottom part of the dash is in sorry shape. I should be able to repair it to make it presentable, but I will be searching for a new piece someday. These 25 plus year old plastics are extremely brittle it seems.

That is a clean looking MJ, and a damn nice rear bumper you have there... Did you build that yourself, or pick it up??

Was built by a friend of mine. I'm not sure if he is on here. Neohic is his web name. He's a excellent fabricator. I also have a front, same style.
