I found this over on NAXJA and felt it was important to post it here. Many of you weld on your rigs, so this is a very good story to read.

That is why I grind to prep before welding instead of using chemicals. I have seen alot of guys spray and heat for prep especially on tanks and body panels but I rather use a flap disc and fix the area later than use chemicals.

Yeah I was taught to clean the metal with a grinder or flap wheel and to never use chemical cleaners. Thanks Muddy, that guy was lucky he survived.

I have NEVER heard OR seen anyone use a chemical to prep metal prior to welding. That is news to me. That guy is VERY lucky to be alive, and I hope the best for him.

Good info to post up Mudd!

I'm not sure why he would be using brake cleaner(the old good stuff..not that crappy water based stuff) in the first place.. unless it has to do with cleaning the pitted areas.

Sounds like a little nuclear cloud entered his body. I don't weld, but it seems like you would want to check out the possible repercussions BEFORE you dive in.

now that's scary. I have two methods to clean metal prior to welding, grinder/flap wheel or sand blasting. That's the only ways I've ever done it and now I don't have to worry about thinking about any sort of "chemical cleaner". I'll stick to the tried and true methods I've always used.
