So I never did a build thread when I first built my jeep. Well im gonna do one on this rebuild. Basicly I bought the jeep stock like this:
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b249/bigjim350/1992%20Jeep%20Cherokee/009.jpg
Then I built it to this.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b249/bigjim350/IMG_20111102_174741.jpg

Has been a fun jeep and a dedicated wheeler for the last 2yrs. In that time it has been wheeled pretty hard with lots of dents, scratches, and busted bits. In fact i never even changed the oil in it. Then i got sick of having something i couldnt hop in and drive whenever i wanted. Havent even driven, or wheeled it in months. Well now its time to put it back on the road, and wheel it much easier. Gonna be doing alot of body work on it and painting it. Will also be installing carpet and a headliner. So far I have replaced the front axle shafts, and hub bearings. Think one of my old axle shafts was bent. I also removed my NSS and Matt cleaned it for me. As you can see it was a bit dirty on the outside. had mud and a small rock on the inside.
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b249/bigjim350/IMG_20120430_180247.jpg

Today I replaced the drivers fender that had a bit of trail damage.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b249/bigjim350/IMG_20120514_192732.jpg

Thats all ive done so far. Still need to yank that flare off the fender and trim it. Although it will be on the street, I wont be running flares. Will update as I do more

This is the great thing about a rattle can paint job, you'll be able to get that fender matching quick.

No more rattle can. The jeep is gonna get sanded down and painted with base coat/clear coat. Color is still to be determined

I will still wheel this jeep, just not as hard. I will be looking for another offroad rig to build, but it will probably just be a big lift, big tire mud truck, not a jeep.

I am in the process of pulling every single thing out of the interior except the dash. This is the only way to get everything clean. After 2yrs of wheeling it in the mud with windows down or doors off, its gotten pretty bad in there. Now im wondering whether to put carpet back in it or bedline it. It will still get wheeled but not as much deep water and mud. Im worried about keeping the carpet dry, but also worried if its bedlined it will still be really loud inside. So my question is to the folks that have bedlined their floor, did the bedliner act as a sound deadener at all, or was it about the same?

I bedlined mine last summer with the rustoleum in a can... I didnt notice a difference however I took that carpet stuff thats adhered to the bottom of the carpet out like three years ago... so basicallall I had was the carpet you could see!
the bedliner I opted for is a nice touch and again water resistant too...

So today I finished yanking the interior out, except the dash and door panels, which im not going to pull out. The plan is to install carpet from the back seat forward and bedline the cargo area. Bit dirty in there.

Also im going to finish the body work on the 1/4 panel tomorrow. Started today but couldnt do much cause the last can of bondo i had hardened up.

Still debating on what color to paint it. Have a gallon of white left over from a previous project but would hate to give Matt the satisfaction. I know for sure I cant paint it black cause my bodywork skills aint that good. So the color choice is still up in the air.

bigjim350
05-21-2012, 02:47 AM
Oh yeah, I have a few gallons of yellow so I guess thats a option too.

Camo or matt black would make up for a lack of spraygun control ... :D

A lighter color is gonna be harder to cover that green. Might wanna consider... maybe... blue...

bigjim350
05-24-2012, 01:44 AM
Put on some smaller wheels that I borrowed from Matt. Being a little lower will help me wet sand it this weekend. Also me and my dad did a little body work to it tonight. Hope to have it painted by the end of this 3 day weekend. Will be sprayed with a single stage urathane paint, so the dark color of the green will have no effect on it.

Well it wont be painted this weekend. Didnt make it to the paint store in time to pick up the reducer and hardener. So yesterday I went to the junkyard and got carpet for the jeep. Since it was half off weekend, i got the complete carpet set for $7. Today I did alot more wet sanding. Also noticed that the rear tube bumper I have is too bent up to use from pulling people out, and being pulled out. So I will be putting the stock rear bumper back on. Course to do that Im going to have to straighten the rear sheet metal where the bumper bolts to cause its all bent to shit.

Grey. I got lucky, my jeep has grey interior so I can paint it just about any color and the interior will match

very nicely done thus far... not sure if your a college fan but Ive ALWAYS wanted a metallic burnt orange XJ!... im NOT a Longhorns fan but I DO love that color! but gray interior is not really going with that but perhaps a metallic maroon!

Over the weekend i went to the junkyard. Picked up a nice shiney chrome grill for the jeep. Also found a jeep that had a brand new headliner and soundbar. Today I finished installing all the interior. Will try to get pics of it tomorrow. Also the Jeep is gonna be painted white with the bottom done in black bedliner as well as the bumper end caps.

Finished intalling all the outside mirrors, door handles and locks. Finished intalling the interior. Painted and intalled the grill, and cowl panel. All thats left on the outside is: Bedline the bottom of the Jeep (bought a gallon today), Install rear bumper (painted tonight), put fender trim back on, and put wheels and tires back on. Also need to install rear break shoes........and a new cat :( Hope to get it inspected on monday, and drive to work on tuesday.

Well the hardcore wheeling I did was too much for it, and the front transmission seal blew out on the way home. Also the 2nd radiator I got from rene has all kinds of shit in it and the jeep runs about 210 to 220 going 65....thats too warm for me. So tomorrow I will be pulling the tranny to replace the seal. Oh and some of yall may notice the stripe on the bodyline. I do not like it but it was needed. When i painted it the first time I did not remove the orignal stripe. Well today I took the jeep to matts shop to fix the trans seal. Now in my mind all i needed to do was drop the tranny and pop in the seal...easy huh? OH what a shitty day. But yeah i did get the seal put in and almost finished reinstalling the trans. All i have left to do is bolt of the torque convertor, plug in the sensors, and fill it with fluid. After wenching on my jeep for 8hrs today I now remember why i only do mechanics as a hobby and not a career. If this jeep dont start acting right soon its gonna get scraped.

bigjim350
06-20-2012, 11:18 PM
Got the jeep finished up last night and brought it back home. Test drove it and it doesnt have any leaks. But for some reason it shifts much harder. Still shifts at the right time. Just feels like i put a shift kit in it. All I did was replace the seal and use a torque convertor that matt had laying in the shop, that had much less wear. Im thinking that my old torque convertor was getting worn out and slipping too much. But now I have to change the fluid in the rear diff, and put some in the tcase. Got a howling somewhere, not sure if its the rear or the tcase. Power steering hoses are leaking too.......DAMN this white paint

Well first I made sure the rear axle will be fixed for good, will NEVER have another problem out of it

Then I changed the fluid in my tcase, it was pretty bad. I also bought and installed a new radiator. To me it still seems to run too warm. It may still have some air in the system. Dont think it does though. So here is what the temp was while going 70mph with the A/C on. The outside air temp was about 96* and as always down here, the road was flat. What do yall think, too hot?

Love the green pumpkin cover! Mine runs a hair above 210*.... no matter what. I'd prefer it to be cooler, but I don't know.

Mine ran warm like that last summer here in Arkansas but since then I cut holes in the Hood and put a new clutch fan on it never gets over 210* unless pulling long upgrade hills, and that diff color is cool I was going to go sublime green but went john deer yellow lol since my xj is dark forest green :D

I thought about uprgrading the fan, but it never runs that warm idleing only while going down the highway. Might throw some vents in the hood or something.

I would upgrade the manual fan to the zj clutch I bet it will drop down to 210 while driving like mine has

Grand Cherokee fan didn't help my on highway heat problem. It looks like I need to change it though. She's starting to run warm sitting in traffic, cools down when I get going.

If you're looking for the part number for the fan clutch, check out the xjtalk articles.

Today I put in a new temp sensor, new electric fan, and new grand cherokee fan clutch. Also removed my A/C condensor since I dont use the A/C anyway. The condensor was pretty beat up and had alot of dirt in it. Hopfully it will cool better now, so far it has. Ive owned and wheeled my XJ for over 3yrs now and am just now seeing the whole "just empty every pocket" thing. Have been spending a few hundred on it every weekend for about a month now, sure is getting old!

Well lucky for me I got buddies that have lots of good parts, and help me out a lot. If not for that I wouldnt have any power at the house. Cause I WOULD buy jeep parts instead of paying the light bill if I had to :)
