Personally I can't stand 706. Loved my 718. Thought the 7000 was okay for HF, doesn't compare to a F121 or F221 for vhf/uhf (unless you need ssb for something).

Like the Micoms I get to play with.

There is so little repeater activity (here in the Houston area) that I switched to HF to listen to/from work. Sad really especially now that rigs are so cheap.

I have no problems with the 706, in fact I have two of them. Make it easier to remember the menus that way. ;o)

Nothing wrong with a 706, I just can't stand them for whatever reason. I'd take a 857 before a 706…I don't know why. I also don't run HF mobile (unless we're talking about 10m and 6m FM).

I've never thrown my call out in Houston and not had someone come back to me. There's always someone listening on the Saltgrass repeaters. Even at 2 or 3 in the morning. Oddly enough, I don't miss our tie-in in Lubbock being down though.

I wasn't active for awhile and when I got back on I thought the Saltgrass thing was really neat and a great idea. I then found it was a "private" repeater network. I understand it's their time and money but boy that really rubbed me the wrong way. Private repeater network in HAM radio? Just doesn't seem to mix to me.

No one gave me a hard time, but yeah if I do hear anyone on it's usually on SaltGrass.

They may have changed the "private" thing, but I just decided to stay off of it.

Armadillo is private, Saltgrass is open.

A private repeater network kinda smacks of "snob group" to me.

Depends on the group. Armadillo is interesting because the membership fee pays for the tower sites (they manage to acquire a lot of good locations because they aren't afraid to pay for usage).

There are more to private repeater's than just one keeping things to themselves.

Just saw a ham in Houston post on FB that the Saltgrass repeater network is down or going down. Something about the trustees cutting ties. Don't see anything on the Saltgrass Link System website though.

Understandable. I mean when you have multiple people involved in an ongoing project interests and money is bound to change.

Always an issue when you have multiple folks involved... But does suck for thinking about newly joining such a group.. whether it be HAM or other group where you have to put in money to join or for membership/maintenance fees...

Podcast is weekly, better to leave everything set up for that.

My wife got me a little toy for the Jeep for Xmas,
MAN am I going to have to be VERY good to her next year or what?
A TS-480SAT (http://www.kenwood.com/i/products/info/amateur/ts_480/)
What do you run for a Mobile HF Antenna? I am thinking a Tarheel 300.

Hustler 102" whip and coil with Hustler ball mount. AH-4 antenna tuner.

Got turned off of kenwoods way back in the late 70's early 80's. Apparently they had quality control issues.

The Kenwood TS-520 was a popular rig back then...

I had a radio similar to that, it was a Tempo 2020. Miss that old rig. I have been playing with the TS-480SAT with a long wire in the attic, As I am only a tech+ and have not even touched a key or paddle in over 20 years... I'll just have to wait until I test for General. I have had nothing but good luck with Kenwood radios, I have 2 TM-D700A dual banders with built in APRS that I have had since about 2000 and have been rock steady. HF is new for me, but I have a few friends who are active on 40m - 10m And I wanted a good bug out rig that could tune up a barbed wire fence if need be. So tell me Tony, how does your antenna and tuner tune up on 40m?
