this is going to be my first build thread on here so i'm going to try.....should have started it a while ago because i have done some work to this cherokee but its no where near done so ill start from the beginning.
bought this thing from a dealer after seeing it drop by $1000 bucks.
162, 873 k miles...
4x4 pretty much all stock sport trim

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p540/gregs_xjs/IMG00306-20120316-1440.jpg

bought a rough country 3 inch lift (three inch coils, 2 inch add-a-leafs, sway bar drop bracket, 4 N2.0 shocks, and new lowers control arms)

with the front done

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p540/gregs_xjs/IMG00317-20120317-1658.jpg

and now the back

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p540/gregs_xjs/IMG00320-20120319-1925-Copy.jpg

the leafs gave me a problem since my leafs for already shot, so i scrapped the idea of using add a leaf (ended up selling them to my buddy's brother) and threw in some blocks in the rear until im ready to lift it more.

now some tire action.

http://i1154.photobucket.com/albums/p540/gregs_xjs/newtire.jpg

kuhmo kl71s.... i pretty much swear by these things, best tires ever. 31x10.5x15 on some alloy ultra wheel 164s...

also got the fender flares off, ready for some trimming

i picked up some 2 inch coil spacers, 2 inch shackles, a t-case drop and some brake lines off craigslist. new plans for the future include a little more lift, finishing the trimming of the fender, got a cb from my grandfather (just need an antenna and bracket), bedlining rockers and some exhaust work. ill keep on posting. hope this came out good just spent like an hour on it. -greg

I like the dark green, the yellow, the blue, and especially the black XJs. When we made the decision on the red XJ I was actually about to buy a all black TJ with a hard top, 4.0 and standard transmission.

The dark red (looks maroon) I'm not found of. That is the color of our 99. And I've seen ONE purple XJ that there is NOT way I would own.

Yes this 96(?) is a Factory Barney purple. Although I think lifted and outfitted as a bas ass off road rig it might look pretty good this color. Certainly different.

its been a long time. lots of decisions and learning over the past couple months as this was my first cherokee, i have almost let go of er' a couple times but some how i just can't do it.... she has sat alot over the summer, shes been abused when i have used her and now i have decided for a complete overhaul. shes needs alot right now but im going to start with the neccescary mechanical stuff so i can keep her running and then have some fun. shes changed a bit since in the last post in this thread. replaced so many parts, and did a lot more damage. shes going up with some new gears and some bigger tires. going to be more of a wheeler than anything else. go mudd or go home! heres how she sits currently. except lots more dented panels, a broken window, broken headlight, and no sway bars.

so the past week, i have really put some time and money into this rig, i started out last week replacing my upstream 02 sensor which was really killing my gas mileage (7 around town-10 highway) but with that it brought my mileage back up to around 16-20. and it also stopped this annoying sputter when accelerating. after that, i replaced both front wheel bearing assemblies(second time in 3 months) no problems there. i also replaced some broken glass i had on one of my rear doors for $50 from my local scrapyard. i have found it very easy to to install glass on xjs which is always nice. sunday i decided it was time to replace the blown out rear shocks which became a little project as i decided to buy some more heavy duty and longer travel shocks for an awd ford explorer. i needed to modify the small sleeve for the bottom shock mount and drill out the upper mounts a bit but now that they are in i like the stiffer ride and they flex nicely comparable to my rough country 2.2 if not better. for $25 bucks a peice new from autozone there not bad at all. then i decided to diagnose where i had a bad pulley bearing and it turns out my alternator was completely shot and i have no idea how it was making power. but anyway, picked up a new one under warranty from advanced auto and everything seems to be coming together beautifully. oh yeah and i tinted my front glass over the weekend too. i cleaned her up today and see aint as pretty as she used to be but shes almost ready for some more height and bigger rubber. things left to do now are an exhaust, my headers are completely cracked all the way around(4.0s are so obnioxously loud with pretty much open headers) and replace my leaky power steering pump. then it will be time for some fun stuff :) hehehe

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac205/heffernan43/photo33.jpg

not photoshopped, just really shiny after a nice bath and some shine. and yeah i two toned it over the summer with some rattlecan enamel lol.

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac205/heffernan43/photo34.jpg

and i found this on my gf's phone so it's older but still

Niiiice choice on the leafs.... you're gonna pretty much going to HAVE to go long arms in the front to match the height of the rear.
What are your plans?

Sounds like you got some good things going with the build... As far as the exhaust, unless you have some shops that do good deals.. I picked up my 2.5 exhaust w/ flowmaster 40 series from Rusty's when I ordered some other parts for my lift kit for way cheaper than any of the local exhaust shops quoted me.. I've got Rusty's springs and coils and haven't had any issues.. so you should be fine with yours..

I remember looking at gear from Rusty's way back when. The shipping was as much as the gears! :D

lol it wasn't but I found them somewhere else for same price, but much cheaper on the shipping. Hope they've stopped making an extra 20% on shipping over there.

Yea thats one thing I wish Rusty's would try to work on,
Their gear has great value, but after shipping.... not so much.

right now i have rough country fixed lcas, i might try drop brackets, but i have been searching local CL looking for some long arms. i dont plan on really using this to crawl up any mountains lol, but i do want it to flex out nice and be somewhat trail capable, but its mostly gonna be my little wheeler and beater lol

i noticed that. maybe its because im on the east coast, idk but the leafs(which were on sale) and gears shipped for about 90 but i figured the money i saved on the leafs and how cheap rusty's gears are was worth getting screwed for shipping.

okay so definetly some unexpected changes of heart all of a sudden. i decided not to keep the 6.5 leafs and decided to make some bastard packs. i used an xj/xj bastard pack with an aal. sits at about 4 inchs plus i have two in blocks until i figure out how much trimming/modding bumpstopping. i have about 6 inches in the rear right now as i did them yesterday and also threw in two inch spacers on top of my coils. rear end is definetly sitting higher than the front. also the swampers i bought should be gone tommorow. worked out a deal trading my kuhmos and those swampers for 33x14 wide boggers on new soft 8's. dont worry im getting some cash on top of the trade. not going to disclose the amount but im pretty happy. 14 wide is a little crazy but rubber is something you can always change so im gonna try them out. my kuhmos are down to about 50% now to so its time for a change. as for other stuff, the interior is getting a make over and i also put a deposit on an 8.8 with discs already on it from a local scrap yard.

http://i900.photobucket.com/albums/ac205/heffernan43/cherok.jpg

should get some more pics tommorow when if i get the boggers. im gonna borrow my girls iphone too so they will be better quality lol. next things to do are regearing, and some new recovery points as well as some intake work.

Is the friend that is going from 5" of lift to 8.5 going with a new spring/coil setup?? If so why not look at picking up his parts when he upgrades and then pick yourself up some new shocks and such?? Either way the XJ is coming along...

he only had three inch coils with spacers and an aal with blocks. the other one is almost done. just finishing up with the long arms on it. but i got the boggers today and they look sweet. gotta get them balanced and im also doing a new bearing and seal in my power steering box after its been leaking for months and its bad with the 14 wide boggers. maybe ill do a write up. but i only got one pic. and its not great. gotta use the girlfriends phone one day.

so i brought the heep out today, performed pretty well. def like the boggers even though i got stuck once. i left my girlfriend in the jeep and walked down the road to get the dodge to pull myself out and some creepy old f*#k was trying to talk to her about getting naked and shit in the woods, definetly a scary situation while she was in the middle of the hole. she called me so i ran back and the mf'er got in his car and sped off when he saw me. little did he know he was going down a dead end unless he planned on hitting some holes in his hyundai. on the way back the creep got a earful of some not very nice and almost an 18" adjustable to the skull. scratched the idea of walking five minutes to get the dodge and had my buddy come pull me out. should of had that mf'er locked up :jail: but sorry about the language just a very strange and scaring encounter. here some poser pics and me getting pulled out lol. oh yeah and finished up the 10.5 xj on long arms, ill grab some poser shots of that tommorow. :cheerleader:

Wheel with a buddy (2nd vehicle).
Make sure you have communications. Cell, CB, Ham radio, etc...
Have protection. Remember you're off the beaten path and people will misbehave out of the site of the public.

And it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to carry some drinking water just in case things got really bad.

While we always hope for the best, this is why my wife took my teaching seriously, and her M&P Compact is always near, especially when we get separated for any reason out on the trails.

the funny part about all this is that it wasnt even a trail or private property. its a public service road. thats just been wheeled out due to little mantaince. but it definetly makes me think, i better be more prepared even when just going out anywhere nowadays. sad what this world is coming too:confused:

took the jeep out again today, need to get these 14 wides balanced so bad. can only do like 50 on the highway. but i ventured to a pit i have never been to before with some locals from the area. met them on craigslist actually as weird as that is. 50 miles away and def not worth it but made a couple new friends.
shit wheeling and garbage terrain. got pulled out by a YJ  not a bad day....

airbags deployed. tweeked the unibody pretty bad, and destroyed the radiator, clutch fan, power steering pump, and ofcourse the belt snapped. overall not bad. boggers + snow/rain = no good. no seatbelts and i didnt get a bruise on me. my girl got a few stitches in her hand but everyone was okay. dump truck driver didnt even know it happend. thank god insurance is going to let me keep it .
